Aonishiki’s Yokozuna Run

The Haru Basho also carries major stakes at the top of the rankings. Ozeki Aonishiki enters the tournament following his second consecutive championship in January and could earn promotion to yokozuna with another strong performance in Osaka.

Atamifuji Sakutaro promoted to Komusubi

Atamifuji has been promoted to komusubi, the lowest of sumo’s san’yaku ranks, after an impressive performance in the previous tournament.

He becomes the first newly promoted komusubi from Isegahama Stable under the current stablemaster, and the first from the stable since Takarafuji’s promotion in July 2015.

Atamifuji made headlines in the last tournament with a 12–3 record, defeating both yokozuna and finishing as runner-up after a playoff for the championship.

New Makuuchi Debuts

Two wrestlers earned their first promotion to the top-division makuuchi.

Fujiseiun, from Kumamoto City, becomes the first Meiji University graduate to reach the top makuuchi division since Buyuzan in November 2001.

His promotion coincides with that of his stablemate Fujiryoga, who also makes his makuuchi debut. Their advancement marks the first time since November 2011 that two wrestlers from the same stable have been promoted to the top division together, when Sadanofuji and Myogiryu achieved the same feat.

Returnees & Other Notable Movements

Kotoeiho returns to the makuuchi division after previously being demoted, earning his way back to the top level with a strong performance in the previous tournament.

In the juryo division, several wrestlers are also making notable moves. Toshinofuji and Fujitensei both make their juryo debuts, reaching the salaried ranks for the first time in their careers, while Shimazuumi returns to the division after time in the lower ranks. These promotions highlight the constant movement within professional sumo’s ranks as rising prospects push upward and experienced wrestlers fight to regain their place among the sekitori.
