Onosato clinched the championship at the recent Summer Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo with an impressive record of 14 wins and one loss. This victory marked his fourth career tournament win and his second consecutive championship.

His promotion to Yokozuna was remarkably swift. Onosato achieved this promotion in just 13 tournaments, the fastest progression since the Yokozuna rank became an official title in 1909.

Born on June 7, 2000, in Tsubata Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, Onosato, whose birth name is Daiki Nakamura, made his professional sumo debut in May 2023. His rapid rise through the ranks has been nothing short of extraordinary.

More Than One Yokozuna

Some may be surprised to learn that there are currently two active Yokozuna: one on the East side with Hoshoryu and one on the West side with Onosato. Indeed, professional sumo can have multiple Yokozuna simultaneously. The title of Yokozuna is not exclusive to a single individual; rather, it is the highest rank in sumo, awarded to any wrestler who meets the stringent criteria of consistent tournament victories, exceptional performance, and dignified conduct. Throughout sumo history, there have been periods with three or even four active Yokozuna. Conversely, there have also been times, albeit rare, when no wrestler held the title.

Onosato’s promotion is particularly significant as he is the first Japan-born wrestler to reach the rank since Kisenosato in 2017. His achievement is a source of pride for his home region of Ishikawa Prefecture, which was devastated by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake on New Year’s Day 2024. Onosato has expressed his commitment to uplifting his community through his performance and dedication as a Yokozuna.

Onosato’s rise has been characterized by his strong, composed style and disciplined demeanor, drawing widespread praise. His promotion marks a new era for sumo, both domestically and globally, as the sport seeks to expand its international reach.

Final Thoughts

With his promotion, Onosato now shares the top rank with Mongolian-born Hoshoryu, setting the stage for a highly anticipated rivalry. Their first face-off as Yokozuna is expected at the upcoming Nagoya tournament in July, promising an exciting chapter in sumo history.
